A special message from the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Team
June 19 – Juneteenth – is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth celebrations date back to 1866 and have historically been observed with festivals celebrating African American traditions. Today, Juneteenth is often observed with an emphasis on African American education and achievement.
In cities across the U.S., people of all backgrounds and cultures will observe Juneteenth as both a celebration and a time to acknowledge a horrific period in our history that continues to haunt and betray our aspirations for freedom, equality, and justice for all. A greater understanding of our history and the experiences of all those who helped shape it can help advance equity, inclusion, and social justice diversity in our communities and our country.
There are several ways for KP people to participate and gain a deeper understanding of both Juneteenth and the life perspectives of black KP employees and physicians:
